MEASLES VACCINATION - Some Government Claims Examined.

Claim 1: "Vaccination caused the decline of infectious disease!"

Fact number 1: the diseases were already well in decline.

Numerous scholars have demonstrated, using government statistics, that the decline of infectious disease and infant mortality in the industrialised countries began many decades before mass-vaccination. For instance, according to Dr. R. Taylor, in Australia "almost 80 per cent of the reduction in infant mortality between the 1880s and the 1970s occurred prior to the 1930s."(1) Extensive vaccination did not begin in Australia until the mid-1930s and for some diseases did not commence until the 1960s and later.

The decline of infectious disease was due to improvements in hygiene, nutrition, housing, and general living conditions. Claim 2: "Vaccinations are effective; only unvaccinated people get the diseases!"

Fact number 2: outbreaks often occur in vaccinated populations.

There are many examples in the medical literature of disease outbreaks in vaccinated populations. For example, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control reported a measles outbreak in a documented 100% vaccinated population (Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR) 22/6/84). In 1985, the US Government reported 1,984 non-preventable cases of measles: 80% were fully-immunised (MMWR 6/6/86). In 1989, of the 17,850 measles cases reported, 7,149 were appropriately vaccinated and 6,033 had evidence of previous vaccination (MMWR 1/6/90). The Journal of the American Medical Association (21/11/90) contains an article on measles that states: "Although more than 95% of school-aged children in the United States are vaccinated against measles, large measles outbreaks continue to occur in schools, and most cases in this setting occur among previously vaccinated children." Note that when the media talks about "outbreaks" they usually never mention the vaccination status of the victims.

Claim 3: "Vaccinations are safe!"

Fact number 3: The short & long-term adverse effects are not being appropriately studied.

The reality is that no-one really knows the true extent of adverse reactions to vaccines simply because government health authorities do not make provision for, nor encourage the collection of adverse reports. It is not compulsory for doctors to report adverse reactions to vaccination. Several studies have found that adverse reactions that are noted by concerned parents are only very rarely reported by doctors. Even less are investigated by government health departments.

Documented adverse-effects of measles vaccination include: atypical measles, ataxia (loss of muscle coordination), brain damage, learning disability, retardation, aseptic meningitis (similar to polio), seizures (epilepsy), paralysis, and death. Measles vaccination is highly suspected of being linked to: Multiple Sclerosis, Reye's syndrome, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Guillain-Barre syndrome, blood-clotting disorders, juvenile-onset diabetes, autism, Chron's disease and other serious stomach problems.(2)

In the UK, there are presently more than 1,200 families involved in class action lawsuits against the UK government, doctors and vaccine manufacturers as a result of injuries and deaths caused by their recent measles vaccination campaign.(3)

Claim 4: " (As of early 1998) Australia is about to undergo a measles epidemic if sufficient levels of vaccination aren't reached."

Fact number 4: this is mere scaremongering. The modelling is flawed:

The government has based their current measles campaign on mathematical modelling used by the UK government to 'predict' a similar epidemic in 1994-95. However, this ignores published medical evidence from the August 1995 "Bulletin of Medical Ethics" which said that:
1) there was never going to be a measles epidemic in the UK - the modelling to predict it was flawed;
2) The British government knowingly misled parents about the need for the campaign and about the relative risks of measles disease and measles vaccine;
3) The Department of Health broke the European Union's law on contracts and tendering to ensure that two particular vaccine manufacturers were awarded the contract (how is Australia's vaccine contract being awarded?); and
4) The UK had a large stock of vaccine which was approaching its use-by-date (does Australia also have vaccine which must be used in the near future?(3)

Will Australians soon pay the price paid by those in the UK for listening to a government that based its decisions on economic rather than health considerations?
